Do you need to file a Self Assessment?
You usually need to send a return if any of the situations below apply. If you are not sure, we will check for you.
| You probably need to file if you are | Examples |
|---|---|
| Self-employed or a sole trader | Delivery or private-hire drivers, tradespeople, freelancers, online sellers |
| A landlord | Renting out a property or a room above the tax-free allowance |
| A company director with untaxed income | Dividends or other income not taxed at source |
| A higher earner | Income over the Self Assessment threshold, or affected by the High Income Child Benefit Charge |
| Earning other untaxed income | Savings, investments, foreign income or capital gains |
Tax returns for delivery and private-hire drivers
If you drive for Uber, Bolt, Deliveroo, Just Eat, Amazon Flex or as a taxi or private-hire driver, you are self-employed in the eyes of HMRC. That means you need to register and file a Self Assessment on the money you earn. It sounds daunting, but this is one of our most common jobs and we make it simple.
We help drivers:
- Register with HMRC and get your UTR set up (see our self-employment registration service)
- Work out your profit from your earnings summaries and statements
- Claim mileage and running costs correctly (45p/mile for the first 10,000 miles, then 25p), so you do not overpay
- Claim other allowable costs such as your phone, insurance and platform fees
- File on time and tell you exactly what to pay and when
