What is a UTR and why do you need one?
A Unique Taxpayer Reference (UTR) is a 10-digit number HMRC gives you when you register for Self Assessment. You need it to file your tax return and, if you work in construction, to register under the Construction Industry Scheme. When we register you as self-employed, your UTR is issued as part of the process, so there is nothing separate to apply for. Find your UTR number on GOV.UK
When should you register?
Register as soon as you start trading. The legal backstop is 5 October after the end of the tax year you began, but leaving it late risks penalties and a rush before your first return. The sooner you register, the sooner your UTR arrives and the calmer your first year is. See set up as a sole trader on GOV.UK
