Universal Credit Support for the Self-Employed

Accurate income and expense reporting to support your Universal Credit claim.

If you are self-employed and claiming Universal Credit, the figures matter. Every month you have to report your income and expenses, and getting them wrong can affect your payments. At WPC Accountants, we take care of the accounting side, so your monthly figures are accurate, your records are tidy and your claim is backed by numbers you can rely on.

We support the financial and accounting side of your claim. Your eligibility for Universal Credit and the amount you receive are decided by the Department for Work and Pensions (DWP). We are not a welfare benefits adviser. For the rules and to apply, see Universal Credit on GOV.UK.

How we help

How we help with your Universal Credit claim

The accounting side of a UC claim comes down to accurate figures, tidy records and understanding the rules. Here is what we do.

What we doWhy it helps
Monthly income and expense reportsWe prepare the earnings figures you report to DWP each assessment period, so they are accurate and on time.
Clear, tidy recordsWe keep your self-employment records in order, which makes reporting quick and gives you evidence if DWP asks.
Help understanding the figuresWe explain how your profit is worked out and how the Minimum Income Floor and start-up period may affect you.
Joined-up with your taxThe same figures feed your Self Assessment, so nothing is done twice and everything lines up.

What you need to know

Universal Credit and self-employment: what you need to know

If you are self-employed and claiming Universal Credit, three things are worth understanding.

PointWhat it means
Monthly reportingAt the end of each monthly assessment period you report how much you earned and spent, even if it is nothing. We prepare these figures for you.
Minimum Income FloorIf you are treated as gainfully self-employed, DWP may work out your payment using an assumed level of earnings, even if you earned less that month.
12-month start-up periodIf you are newly self-employed, the Minimum Income Floor may not apply for up to 12 months, giving your business time to grow.
